“Explorer John C. Fremont’s expedition to San Francisco to map out a railroad route along the 38th parallel in the winter of 1849 came to a halt in the snow. Multiple voices take on the task of telling the story of a man who was an enigma but still attracted many followers. As Wheeler tells the story from multiple perspectives, listeners hear Fremont’s wife, her young daughter, a rough-hewn adventurer, and an elegant British officer, among others. The many perspectives provide vivid descriptions of Fremont’s journey–such as dying mules and men. Listening to this tale of hunger and cold may give some listeners a chill even as it fascinates.”
